Aloo Matar (Potatoes and Peas)

  • Yield: 2 servings 1x


  • 1 tbs coconut oil or ghee
  • 1 palmful cumin seed
  • 1-3 small dried red chili peppers
  • 1 medium cooked potato (peeled)
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2-3/4 cup peas
  • to taste salt
  • 1/2 cup cilantro (chopped)
  • 1/2 medium lime,  juiced


  1. Boil or steam potatoes with peel on, then remove peel when cool enough to handle.
  2. In a frying pan, heat oil on high until very hot.
  3. Add the chilies, pepper flakes, and cumin seed.
  4. Turn down the heat and cook until cumin is golden.
  5. Using your hand, crush the potato into pieces over the pan, adding it to the spices.
  6. Turn heat to high and cook potato until covered in spices.
  7. Add the peas and salt to taste.
  8. Cover pan and cook 2-4 minutes until peas are cooked and potatoes are beginning to crisp.
  9. Turn off the heat, add cilantro, and mix.
  10. Before serving, squeeze lime juice over potatoes.
