Swedish Meatballs with Cream Sauce

  • Yield: 24 meatballs 1x


These meatballs can be frozen for later use.




  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 2 tbs butter
  • 1/4 medium onion (finely diced)
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 medium egg (lightly beaten)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbs fresh parsley (finely chopped)
  • 1/4 tsp allspice (ground)
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder


  • 2 tbs butter
  • 2 tbs flour (we like gravy flour but regular will work fine)
  • 1 cup beef or veggie stock
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp dijon mustard
  • to taste salt & pepper



  1. Melt butter in a large non-stick frying pan.
  2. Sauté the onions until soft, then remove the heat from the pan and let cool.
  3. While the onions are cooking, place the pork, beef, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, nutmeg, allspice, garlic powder, and parsley in a large bowl.
  4. When the onions are cool, add to the mix.
  5. Use your hands to thoroughly mix everything together.
  6. Shape into 24 1 inch meatballs, being sure to tightly roll them around so they keep their round shape.
  7. Over medium heat, melt butter in the same pan that you cooked the onions in.
  8. When hot, add several meatballs to the pan, cooking in batches, being sure not to overcrowd.
  9. Let the meatballs cook, shaking the pan every so often until the meatballs are golden brown and cooked through.
  10. When all the meatballs are cooked, make the sauce.


  1. Add butter to the pan and melt over medium heat.
  2. Sprinkle on the flour, whisk, and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Slowly whisk in the stock and cream and cook, whisking constantly, until the sauce starts to thicken.
  4. Taste and season with salt, pepper, dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Add the meatballs back in to the sauce and coat meatballs.
  6. Serve over egg noodles
